AIRPORT SUPERINTENDENT
Pay Grade: 22
Dept: Engineering
Exempt:  Yes
Reports to: Airport Manager
Hours: 40 per week
Date:  October 2006

SUMMARY: This position supervises and works with a small group of employees engaged in airport maintenance operations including buildings, grounds, and utilities.  This position operates with a minimum of supervision under the Public Services Director, and must exercise considerable judgment in solving maintenance and repair problems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Supervises routine maintenance tasks, including concrete repair and forming, plumbing repair, mowing, landscaping, airfield pavement repair, lighting repair, and fencing and building maintenance.
  • Performs sheet metal repair and fabrications, spray painting, welding and cutting, heavy equipment operation, electrical trouble shooting, new system installation, and engine and tractor tune-up and repair.
  • Performs radio operation maintenance, security and crowd control, application of herbicides, and enforces airport regulations.
  • Works with airport tenants to solve maintenance and repair problems, and recommends equipment purchases.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduation, preferably with supplementary training in quasi engineering subjects or a trades apprentice is required.  Some experience in supervision of an unregulated air field, including maintenance and operations is preferred.  College graduation desirable or any combination of experience and education is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  The applicant must have the ability to read and understand blue prints, plans, specifications and air traffic regulations.  The applicant must be able to keep The applicant must be able to communicate orally, establish and maintain good relations with fellow employees, agency officials, tenants, airport users and the general public.





OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of airport operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to schedule and supervise workers.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess skills to use hand power tools and in the operation of automotive equipment used in light construction work.
  • Possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be reaching, climbing, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, stooping, and pushing.  The employee may work inside or outside in various weather conditions, and in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment.  Incumbent may have to work in dusty conditions or on uneven surfaces, with grease or oils and heights.
