SUMMARY: This position is responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility. Employees in this class report to the Chief Water Plant Operator and help supervise plant operators, trainees, and maintenance workers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists with the supervisory functions and performs the operations of the water treatment plant facility.
- Helps plan and organize the working schedule of subordinate personnel.
- Diagnoses and corrects problems pertaining to the plant operations.
- Performs and supervises the testing required by State and Federal agencies.
- Maintains quality and quantity controls and keeps daily records and logs of operations.
- Makes daily visits to well sites to take flow readings, fluoride usage, etc.
- Maintains and/or replaces equipment, pumps, motors, etc.
- Orders necessary equipment and supplies.
- Submits reports to other agencies concerned with the plant operations.
- Performs chemical analysis as necessary.
- Monitors and operates computers for alarms and proper operation of lift stations, plant and collection system.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. A comparable amount of educations, training, or experience may be substituted for minimum requirements. The applicant must possess a State of Florida "B" operator's certificate in water or a "B" license in water plant treatment operation. A considerable amount of experience in the operation of water plant, preferably with supervisory experience is desired.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: The applicant must have the ability to prepare and maintain required records of operation. The applicant must have the ability to organize and supervise the work of others and to develop and maintain good personal relationships with others is desirable.
REASONING ABILITLY: The applicant must be able to perform basic and advanced mathematical calculations and shop math (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, algebra, calculus, and statistics). The applicant must be able to read safety manuals, operation guides, instructions, letters, memos, journals, maps, work orders, schematics, professional journals, legal documents, blue prints, and financial reports.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Considerable knowledge of the techniques and practices in the operation of water facilities.
- Understanding of basic chemistry and bacteriology as applicable to such operations is necessary.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
- Requires finger dexterity, depth perception, and very heavy lifting and carrying.
- Possess a valid Florida driver’s license with hazardous material handling clearance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may reach, climb, walk, stand, stoop, drive, balance or push to complete job task. Employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions. May work in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment. May come in contact with heights, electrical energy, poor lighting, darkness, odors, and may be required to have legs, feet, or hands in water while on the job.
