COMPUTER NETWORK SPECIALIST
Pay Grade: 24
Dept: IT
Exempt:  No
Reports to: Asst IT Dir
Hours: 40 per week
Date:  November 2006

SUMMARY:   This position comprises of advanced technical work including hardware maintenance of personal computer networks.  This position performs maintenance of the computer networks, and provides application support for the end users.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Consults with Director on feasibility of system requests.  
  • Repairs computer hardware.
  • Replaces damaged parts through warranty repairs or orders new parts.
  • Maintains inventory levels of spare parts.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on computer equipment.
  • Assists end users with assigned application software which will include training of users.
  • Reports and corrects program problems.
  • Orders and upgrades assigned software applications.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited university or college with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, math or related area is required.  The applicant must have a minimum of two years experience in data processing operations including one (1) year of experience in program/analyst work in the computer hardware maintenance area, or associates degree in Computer Science, Math or related area and three (3) years experience in data processing including one (1) year experience in computer hardware maintenance.  High school graduation supplemented by special programming courses in one or more computer languages and four (4) years experience in data processing operations including one year of experience in computer hardware maintenance may be substituted for associates degree or college degree requirements.

REASONING ABILITLY:  The applicant must have the ability to analyze, evaluate, plan, and implement operational system programs.  The applicant must have the ability to train others in technically difficult subjects.  The applicant must have the ability to exercise ingenuity and inventiveness in problem solving.  




OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of capabilities, limitation, and general characteristics of computers.
  • rough knowledge of the techniques and procedures of computer programming methods and testing.  
  • Skills in applying procedures to improve system efficiency.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer hardware.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long of periods of time viewing a computer screen.  Some of these functions include accessing file cabinets for filing and retrieval of data.
