SUMMARY: This position is responsible for technical administrative and supervisory work assisting the Chief Building Official in directing and coordinating the operation of the Building Division and the enforcement of the various codes; law and ordinances regulating construction; and the use and of occupancy of buildings, structures and lands, whether public or private. The Deputy Building Official has the primary responsibility to assure that the safety and health of the public is maintained through adherence to those requirements as established by law. This position reports to the Chief Building Official.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in the organization of office activities and provides supervision to inspection and plans
- review staff.
- Reviews building and site plans.
- Provides technical assistance to City staff.
- Technical Review Committee Member.
- Conducts building and site inspections.
- Reviews soil density.
- Provides water, sewer and other impact fee calculations for builders, the public and the City water department.
- When required, collects monies due for fees.
- Presents facts and recommendations to various appointed or elected boards and committees.
- Presents testimony in court or to the Special Magistrate.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: At least 10 years experience as an architect, engineer, inspector, contractor, or any combination of these is required. Incumbent must be licensed as a Building Code Administrator in the State of Florida and hold certification as a Certified Building Official (BOCA, SBCCI or ICC). Incumbent must obtain certification as a Registered Certifying Agent with the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) or LEED Accreditation with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) within 365 days of hire.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: The applicant must have the ability to present facts and recommendations to groups such as the Planning Board, Special Magistrate, the City Commission and other State or local agencies. The applicant must be able to communicate both orally and in writing and be able to prepare efficient reports that are understandable to other professionals and the general public.
REASONING ABILITLY: The applicant must have the ability to develop long-term plans and to evaluate work accomplishments, and ability to establish harmonious relationships with other employees and the general public.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering practices as applied to the construction and inspection of houses, apartments, and commercial and/or industrial buildings.
- Ability to prepare effective written and oral reports.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
- Ability to drive a car.
- Applicant must possess a valid Driver’s license issued by the State of Florida.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work inside in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions. The employee may also be required to work in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment, on uneven surfaces, and in dusty or noisy conditions. This position may require employee to bend, squat, reach, lift, or climb in either open or tight/confined spaces.
