EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I
Pay Grade: 16
Dept: Public Works
Exempt:  No
Reports to: Garage Foreman
Hours: 40 per week
Date:  November 2006

SUMMARY:   This position performs skilled mechanical repairs on a variety of light, medium, and heavy automotive equipment.  An employee in this class performs skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of a variety of City automotive equipment.  Assignments are received in the form of general oral and written work orders, but the employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs.  General supervision is received and work is reviewed through the proper functioning and performance of equipment repaired.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Inspects, repairs, and road tests automobiles, trucks, fire engines, heavy earth moving equipment, mowers, and other City owned vehicles.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and repairs gasoline engines.
  • Inspects, adjusts, and repairs backhoes and loaders, and all component parts.
  • Repairs automotive electrical and brake systems.
  • Performs field repairs in emergencies.
  • Performs welding operations as required on equipment.
  • Fills out shop forms and reports through clerical and data entry providing all information needed to create account reports.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High school graduation or GED is required. Considerable experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic, completion of a recognized apprenticeship in this work and completion of a standard high school course is desired. Possession of a motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Florida, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training is required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Employee must be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.




OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic's trade.
  • Good knowledge of the principles of operation of internal combustion engines.
  • Good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the care and use of tools employed in all phases of automotive maintenance and repair work.
  • Skill in locating and adjusting defects.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carryout oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  Employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals.  Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces.  Some job tasks may require employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, operate equipment, crawl, push or life or carry 45 pounds or more.
