EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
Pay Grade: 13                                                           Dept: PW/WW/WP/Airport
Exempt:  No                                                             Reports to: Foreman
Hours: 40 per week                                                      Date:  October 2009

SUMMARY:   This position operates mowers, medium and heavy automotive equipment, and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of specialized equipment.  The work requires considerable skill in operating motor equipment and constant awareness of safety operation in order to prevent accidents.  Assignments are outlined in detail by superiors.  Standard procedures should be followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and efficiency in operation.  This class differs from Maintenance Worker classes because of the higher degree of skill required, the amount of time spent in operating the equipment, and the greater probability to damage the more expensive equipment.  Supervision may be exercised over other employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Operates automotive equipment such as mowers, front end loaders, bulldozers, graders, dump trucks, tanker trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, self loading dump truck, aerial lift trucks, sewer jets, bucket trucks, and Gradall.
  • Drives transport to haul equipment.
  • Services equipment and operates medium or light automotive equipment.
  • Works as a laborer when required.
  • Helps maintain the water, sewer system and airport equipment.
  • Operates the sewer operator TV and the sewer jet.
  • Repairs water and sewer lines and installs water and sewer pipes.
  • Works at high vertical levels in safety harness gear and bucket trucks with high end power chain saws and pruners.
  • Performs debris removal operations during normal business hours, after hours, weekends, holidays or as needed.
  • Will have working knowledge of tree angle cutting and pruning of right of way trees and proper safety procedures when working on the tree crews.
  • Will have knowledge using power flow high end trailer mounted chipper unit. Must be well verse in safety functions and operation of this type of equipment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED is required.    Possession of valid CDL class “B” motor vehicles operator's license issued by the State of Florida is required. A considerable amount of experience is desired in the operation of medium trucks and automotive equipment with complex operating requirements.  A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Significant experience with the operation of various types of heavy automotive equipment is desirable.
  • Must be able to operate equipment skillfully, safely, and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations.
  • Good knowledge of the hazards, applicable safety rules, and precautions in heavy equipment operation is necessary.
  • Ability to detect needed repairs and to make necessary adjustments is required.
  • Capability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to work independently with other employees and the general public.
  • Good understanding of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation is desirable.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  Employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals.  Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces.  Some job tasks may require employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, operate equipment, crawl, push, pull, lift or carry 75 pounds or less.
