SUMMARY: This is an advanced level professional position involving a wide range of assignments conducted under supervision of the Planning Director. The position requires a thorough knowledge of the planning process and the ability to complete assignments in a thorough, accurate and timely manner.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in the update and preparation of the City Comprehensive Plan and requests to amend Plan.
- Responsible for data collection, research analysis and preparation of comprehensive planning studies and elements.
- Serves as primary reviewer of site plans, zoning requests, and annexations and prepares reports on these items.
- Reviews plans of other development requests and prepares reports.
- May serve as a voting member of the City Technical Review Committee.
- Provides zoning and development information to the public in general.
- Explains development regulations to applicants.
- As required and directed, supervises staff to ensure completion of specific projects.
- Performs special projects as assigned.
- Makes oral presentations with facts and recommendations to various appointed or elected boards and committees.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor’s degree in urban planning or related area is required. Two years of directly related experience in a planning or similar agency is required. Masters degree in urban planning or related area and AICP certification is preferred. Prior experience in site plan review and zoning administration is preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: The employee must be able to read and interpret plans, specifications and legal documents related to site design and planning projects. The employee must also be able to communicate both orally and in writing.
REASONING ABILITLY: The employee must also be able to follow complex oral and written instructions.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of urban planning principles and practices.
- Ability to make oral presentations to boards, committees, and groups.
- Must be able to access/input and retrieve data from a computer.
- Ability to meet multiple deadlines with little or no supervision.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Ability to maintain good relationships with other agencies and the general public.
- Ability to drive a car.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long of periods of time and view a display screen. Some other functions include filing, ordering files, writing reports, and the ability to input and retrieve information from a computer. Occasional outside work to assess site conditions and determine land use is required.
