UMPIRE/REFEREE
Pay Grade: 5
Dept: Parks & Recreation

Reports to: Rec. Mgr.
Hours: Part Time
Date:  November 2006

SUMMARY:   This position officiates the play of sports events and observes and detects infractions of rules and imposes penalties established by the sports' regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Ensures sporting events are played and scored correctly and fairly, competition times are adhered to, and injury times and time outs are noted
  • Penalizes those who break the rules and resolve disputes between teams
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: The applicant must have high school diploma or the equivalent. The applicant must have knowledge of rules and regulations for baseball/softball/flag football.  The applicant should have the required preliminary training/certifications for the job. On the job training is available.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  The applicant must have the ability to develop and maintain good public relations with team members, parents, and other Parks & Recreation employees.  The employee must be able to communicate both orally and in writing. The ability to speak Spanish is beneficial.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to personally relate in a positive professional manner to adults, children, and young people
  • Ability to obtain good order during all games
  • Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations and scorekeeping guidelines for recreational sports such as basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, flag football
  • Good communication skills
  • Quick reflexes and good coordination
  • Certification/training in sport officiating beneficial

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time, have some athletic ability, may work outside in various weather conditions and in noisy conditions.
