URBAN BEAUTIFICATION SUPERINTENDENT
Pay Grade: 22
Dept: Public Works
Exempt:  No
Reports to: PW Dir
Hours:  40 per week

SUMMARY:   This position supervises employees in skilled, semiskilled and unskilled manual labor engaged in the building and repair of sidewalks and the repair of City streets. This employee operates with a minimum of direct supervision and must exercise considerable judgment in carrying out the assigned activities.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Supervises employees building and repairing sidewalks, patching City streets and operating and repairing storm water pumps and drains, and cleaning retention areas.
  • Schedules work and orders supplies and equipment.
  • Receives and acts upon complaints received from the public.
  • Evaluates the work of subordinate employees.
  • Responsible for safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Makes oral and written reports on operations.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Extensive experience in public works or the construction trades. Considerable experience as a supervisor is required. College education is desirable or any equivalent combination of experience and education.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: The employee must be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions, and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to plan and organize the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety practices.
  • Ability to prepare and monitor budgets.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective personal relationships with employees, other departments, civic groups and the general public.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  The employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals.  Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces.  Some job tasks may require the employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, operate equipment, crawl, balance, push or life or carry 45 pounds or more.
