UTILITIES MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT
Pay Grade: O5
Dept: WWTP
Exempt:  No
Reports to: Utilities Dir
Hours: 40 per week
Date:  October  2007

SUMMARY:   This position supervises and may work with a group of employees engaged in skilled, semiskilled and unskilled manual labor in the construction, repair and maintenance of public buildings, grounds and utilities. This position operates with a minimum of direct supervision and must exercise considerable judgment in solving problems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Supervises and may perform construction and maintenance activities in City utilities.
  • Supervises the maintenance of the sewer plants and lift stations.
  • Supervises the maintenance of the water plants.
  • Supervises beautification and maintenance projects on public buildings, grounds and rights-of-way.
  • Orders supplies and equipment.
  • Responds to after hours emergencies.
  • Organizes the work of subordinates and is responsible for satisfactory completion of projects.
  • Responsible for safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Ability to make reports using Excel or Word.
  • Operate lift station SCADA system network.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A High school diploma or GED is required. Extensive experience in work similar to public utilities, maintenance or the construction trades with some experience as a supervisor in such activities is required. College education is desirable or any equivalent combination of experience and education in water and wastewater activities. A class “C” certificate issued by the FWPCOA in collection, reclamation, and water system operations is desirable.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:  The applicant must have the ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with others, and communicate both orally and in writing.



REASONING ABILITLY:  The applicant must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram forms. The applicant must also be able to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to plan and organize the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to keep computerized records and create reports.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety practices in the maintenance and construction trades.
  • Ability to prepare budgets and monitor same.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective personal relationships with employees, other departments, civil groups and the general public.   
  • Possess a valid Florida driver’s CDL class “B” license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may reach, climb, walk, stand, stoop, drive, balance or push to complete job task.  The employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions.  The employee may work in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment.  The employee may also come in contact with heights, electrical energy, poor lighting, darkness, odors, and may be required to have legs, feet, or hands in water while on the job.
