UTILITY LOCATOR
Pay Grade: 14
Dept: Utilities
Exempt:  No
Reports to: Foreman
Hours: 40 per week
Date: November 2006

SUMMARY:   This is professional and technical civil work in locating of water lines for the City, and protecting water mains from breakage or contamination. Work is subject to review by the Public Services Director (City Engineer).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Picks up and locates tickets that are faxed to wastewater treatment plant facility.
  • Sorts locates.
  • Uses equipment to verify water lines and marks.
  • Meets with contractor if requested.
  • Maps new line extensions and adding to existing as-bulits.
  • Determines when it is safe to dig.
  • Meets with engineers, and technical review committee.
  • Performs excavation and probing activities to verify locations.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Completion of a standard high school course, preferably supplemented by business school or college level training is required. Experience in design, construction and maintenance of sewer and water systems is required or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  The employee must be able to read and interpret plans, specifications and legal documents relative to public works planning projects.  The employee must also be able to communicate both orally and in writing.

REASONING ABILITLY:  The applicant must be able to organize and supervise the work of others and to develop and maintain good personal relationships with others. The applicant must be able to read safety manuals, work orders, operation guides, instructions, letters, memos, journals, maps, blue prints, and financial reports.




OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Provides support.
  • Ability to relay information to others.
  • Ability to speak publicly.
  • Ability to explain theory, principles and practices of profession to layman.
  • Supervises Employees.
  • Knowledge of general and advanced math including addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, algebra, calculus, and statistics.
  • Knowledge of shop math is also required.
  • Contract administrations on capital projects.
  • Possesses a valid Florida driver’s license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may reach, climb, walk, stand, stoop, drive, balance or push to complete job task. The employee may work inside an office or outside in various weather conditions, in noise and vibration, in extreme hot/cold, in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment, uneven surfaces, grease or oils, fumes/odors, solvents, and chemicals.
