WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT SUPERINTENDENT
Pay Grade: O5
Dept: WWTP
Exempt:  No
Reports to: Utilities Dir
Hours: 40 per week
Date:  November 2006

SUMMARY:   This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent reports to the Utilities Director/City Engineer and supervises plan operators, trainees, and maintenance workers.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Supervises and performs operations of the wastewater treatment facility.
  • Plans and organizes the working schedules of subordinate personnel.
  • Diagnoses and corrects problems pertaining to the plant operations.
  • Performs or supervises the testing required by State and Federal agencies.
  • Maintains and/or replaces equipment, pumps, motors, and orders necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains quality and quantity control and keeps daily records and logs of operations.
  • Submits reports to other agencies concerned with the plant operations.
  • Performs chemical analysis as necessary.
  • Approves leave and performs evaluations.
  • Maintains SCADA operation systems.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and /or abilities required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A high school diploma or GED is required. Extensive experience in work similar to public utilities, maintenance or the construction trades with some experience as a supervisor in such activities is required. A college education is desirable or any equivalent combination of experience and education in water and wastewater activities. A class “A” certificate issued by the state of Florida may be required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:  The applicant must have the ability to develop and maintain good personal relationship with others, and communicate both orally and in writing.



REASONING ABILITLY:  The applicant must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram forms. The applicant must also be able to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations when immediate guidance from the supervisor may not be available.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the techniques and practices in the operation of wastewater facilities, basic chemistry, and bacteriology applicable to such operations.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain required records and operation.
  • Possesses a valid Florida driver’s license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may reach, climb, walk, stand, stoop, drive, balance or push to complete job task.  The employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions.  The employee may work in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment.  The employee may also come in contact with heights, electrical energy, poor lighting, darkness, odors, and may be required to have legs, feet, or hands in water while on the job.
