DeLand Police Department
Monday March 29, 2010
Spring Break is here this week and here are some safety reminders for Parents and kids from the DeLand Police Department:
1. Always check first with your parents or the person in charge before you go anywhere or do anything. Be sure to check in regularly with your parents when you’re not with them. 2. Always use the buddy system when you go somewhere or play. It’s safer and more fun.
3. Don’t be tricked by people who offer you special treats or gifts. Never take anything from anyone without your parents’ permission.
4. Stay safe at home when you’re home alone by keeping the doors locked; not opening the door for or talking to anyone who stops by unless your parents have preapproved this visit. Never tell anyone that calls your home that you are home alone. Have a trusted neighbor or adult that you can call besides your parent if there is an emergency or your scared.
5. Never go to a public restroom by yourself.
6. Never go alone to malls, shopping centers, movies, the beach or parks by yourself. Take a friend with you, and always check with your parents first to make sure it’s okay.
7. Don’t panic if you feel lost. Look for the safest place to go or a person like a cashier for help in searching for your parents. Never search for them alone and never go off alone with anyone that is a stranger who is offering to help you find your parents.
8. Be careful where you play. Stay away from pools, canals, ponds and other bodies of water unless your with an adult. Don’t play near busy streets or deserted areas, and never take shortcuts.
9. Don’t wear clothes or carry items with your name on the outside, and don’t be confused just because someone you don’t know calls out your name. Treat them like a stranger. Remember a stranger is anyone your parents don’t know or approve of.
10. Don’t get into any vehicles or go near any vehicles with someone in it unless you are with your parents or a trusted adult. Never take a ride with from someone without checking first with your parents.
11. When riding a bike, skateboard, or roller-skates, wear a helmet. It’s the LAW!
12. Never be afraid to say NO and GET AWAY from any situation that makes you feel uncomfortable or confused. Trust your feelings, and be sure to tell a trusted adult if something happens that makes you feel this way.
